LGBT Media Conference to Take Place in Orlando | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

LGBT journalists, bloggers, and other professionals will gather March 23-26 in Orlando for the 7th annual #LGBTMedia convention. The media members who most proudly cover the LGBT community plan to convene on March 23 at Orlando’s Rosen Centre with the specific goal of better informing each other on the current topics that most prominently impact the LGBT community.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

The convening of journalists this year is sponsored by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) and funded by the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, a private family foundation based out of San Francisco that “promotes equal rights and opportunities with an emphasis on immigrants and gays and lesbians,” according to the foundation's mission statement.

“#LGBTMedia2017 is focused on giving LGBT journalists deeper insights into current topics and skills-building,” said Matt Foreman, Senior Program Director for the Haas, Jr. Fund. “Because we’ve added an extra day to the event this year, we’ll be covering a broad range of topics, including coverage of international issues and understanding journalism on trans issues.

The LGBT "TwitterSphere" - How Do You Do It? The Unique Language of Twitter

The LGBT "TwitterSphere" - How Do You Do It? The Unique Language of Twitter | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it
As the second part of the LGBT TwitterSphere series of articles, this blog post focuses on the HOW of Twitter... how do you do it and how do you make it work for you?  This is key, as a large number of individuals and businesses are posting from Facebook to Twitter automatically, which just doesn't cut it.  Others are focused solely on driving traffic to their websites, and if they are an LGBT media company, their website might be the only place an advertiser is able to be promoted, not on Twitter directly

Pride and Prejudice Interview with Tony Tenicela of IBM

Pride and Prejudice Interview with Tony Tenicela of IBM | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

Diversity is my passion and it is an integral part of who I am. From an early age, I was exposed to different cultures, languages, customs, and beliefs being encouraged by my parents to see these differences as energizing, engaging, and ultimately freeing. Embracing the “other” in the world enabled me to ultimately embrace my own sense of self –to accept and nurture my own differences. As a result, when I joined IBM back in 1996, I was an openly gay Hispanic man with a drive for making an impact.

Matt Skallerud's insight:

IBM was attractive to me as an employer primarily due to the company’s global reputation for driving diversity and inclusion and its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community. The company has consistently taken the lead on inclusive policies – long before it was required by law. In 1953, IBM issued the first Equal Opportunity Policy letter, more than ten years before the United States’ Civil Rights Act of 1964. The company then incorporated Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression into the letter in 1984 and 2002, respectively. In addition to IBM’s impressive record on diversity and inclusion globally, my reason for joining IBM was the group of interviewers who proudly embodied the company’s all-inclusive and respectful culture. The authenticity that characterised those conversations made a lasting impression on me.

The LGBT "TwitterSphere" - This is Where the LGBT Eyeballs are Going Today!

The LGBT "TwitterSphere" - This is Where the LGBT Eyeballs are Going Today! | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

We're going to go out on a limb here, stick our necks out, and make a strong statement - we believe the "TwitterSphere" is at a unique place in history, sitting on the edge of its tipping point.  We believe it's sitting at that very same inflection point the Internet was back in the late 90's, when most people were accessing it via AOL, Netscape was the dominant browser, and a comment we heard time and time again was "the Internet is simply the CB radio of our time... it too shall pass".

Matt Skallerud's insight:

Fast forward to today, and with everything that's taken place since then, including the dot com bust and the subsequent growth of strong Internet-based businesses from all facets of life and industry, it's easy to see that doubting the direction and growth of the Internet was misguided at best.
