Fort Lauderdale tourism—which has been courting lesbian and gay visitors for decades—on New Year's Eve will roll out a new campaign that could be a first in the travel category, with transgender models starring in mainstream media ads.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau advertising campaign, created by Fort Lauderdale-based Starmark International, is kicking off with two new videos on twin billboards at 1515 Broadway and on a bowtie billboard at 1500 Broadway, both in New York's Times Square.

Few would argue that American society has changed dramatically since the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village marked the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. At the time of the event itself, which happened 48 years ago this week, homophobia was rampant, even in famously metropolitan Manhattan. After the riots, the New York Daily News, which is now seen as the left-leaning counter to Ruper Murdoch’s New York Post, ran with the inflammatory headline “Homo Nest Raided—Queen Bees Are Stinging Mad.”

Back then, no “mainstream” brand was brave enough to openly support the LGBTQ community. And there’s no question that some consumers still take exception to gay rights today.

But the following Twitter thread by PR veteran Jarrett Way, which came in response to just such a consumer, and went viral over the weekend, illustrates why it’s no longer risky for any big brand to stand in solidarity with LGBTQ Americans—exactly two years after the Supreme Court officially made same-sex marriage the law of the land.

Options, Rhode Island’s longest running LGBT publication, is marking its 35th anniversary. To celebrate, the publication put on a gala celebration in downtown Providence on May 20, 2017. The publication has undergone many changes through the years, starting as a newsletter produced in conjunction with AIDS Care Ocean State and evolving into a glossy monthly magazine. “The dedication of our volunteers is the only reason Options has survived,” Kyle McKendall, the publication’s executive director, said while mingling with writers, readers and other supporters.
