South Florida Businesses Market to the LGBT Community

South Florida Businesses Market to the LGBT Community | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

Restaurants, hotels, travel, beverages and entertainment have been the traditional businesses sponsoring and marketing to the audience, but with the opportunities rising and acceptance increasing, banks, malls, auto dealers, pharmacies, and jewelers are adding the LGBT target to their marketing plan. The list of local businesses supporting the LGBT events reads like a Who’s Who of South Florida businesses. They include Wells Fargo, Adams Furniture, The Isle Casino, Broward Health, Daoud’s Fine Jewelry, Arrigo Automotive, and Macy’s. From the 65 mile Pinecrest to the Keys Smart (Bike) Ride, to the Stonewall Parade and Festival in Wilton Manors, businesses have many sponsorship opportunities.

Now a Gay-Owned Business Is a Family Business. Is More Government Work Next?

Now a Gay-Owned Business Is a Family Business. Is More Government Work Next? | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

Yesterday the Supreme Court struck down federal law defining marriage as a union between heterosexual partners—a ruling that gives same-sex couples tax and insurance benefits and makes it easier to transfer property between spouses. A bigger boon for gay-owned businesses with something to sell to government, writes Inc.’s Jeremy Quittner, would be inclusion in a federal program that helps socially and economically disadvantaged small businesses compete for government contracts.

Let me just say that this man is a total idiot. Although I don't agree with anything that he has done or has had to say, I do see a great lesson to be learned here. He is a man that holds a lot of power within a major corporation and has also made millions from it. He expresses his hated and prejudice ideas about the LGBT community very openly. He has also been donating to anti-gay charities and organizations for many years. It makes a very bad statement for himself, let alone his company.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I will say that this idea of using social media in order to express such views, and then later delete the views, is a bad idea. It makes him look very weak and also very cowardly. This isn't the first time that the company has been caught in a social media frenzy, either. One thing that I have learned is that you need to stand your ground, or Tweet for this matter, and own your right to free speech. Although he has bad choices of words and opinions, in my opinion, he should not delete his tweets. He should probably just delete his entire social networking accounts altogether. No but really, it's a big mistake to delete something like that, and millions will find out anyway. Next time, just keep it to yourself.

PRESSING QUESTIONS: Quest Magazine of Green Bay, Wisconsin

PRESSING QUESTIONS: Quest Magazine of Green Bay, Wisconsin | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it
PPQ: When did you launch your publication, and what inspired you to do it?
Publisher Mark Mariucci: February 1993. At that time, I owned a large dance club in Green Bay. The main LGBT media publication was called In Step and mostly covered Milwaukee where it was based. I hoped to level the playing field a bit by publishing a cheaper publication that small bars in little cities could afford and also give them, along with my bar, more coverage of events. We always distributed in Milwaukee, but we also were in every city that had at least one gay bar back then.

Sean G. Smith's curator insight, July 21, 2013 7:32 PM

This list of companies that is provided really shows a lot of growth and support on many different levels. I think that it is extremely important for a company to be well-rounded and open-minded to every single set of diverse consumers. There are less people in this world who are full of hatred and prejudice than there are people who are accepting of everyone. It makes a big statement for a company to come out and say that they support equal rights, and these companies have had no problem doing so.

When companies come out like this, there is always a big chance of backlash and I'm pretty sure they have all suffered from it. Although there is backlash, that is just about the biggest thing they have to deal with. Picture it being all over the news and social media sites and think of all the publicity they are getting. They've already won, right? Well I think they have. It just goes to show that people are no longer standing for discrimination, and these companies fully support the new direction that this country and this market is headed in.

Sean G. Smith's curator insight, July 21, 2013 7:59 PM

Until recently, all television shows and commercials have always featured heterosexual couples and "normal" families. WIth the change of pace throughout the world, it is also time for things to change with these types of entertainment as well. It is unrealistic to think that every single couple is a heterosexual couple and that every family has a mommy and a daddy. This is not how the world works anymore, and many corporations have began to make the loud and clear switch.

I think that it is amazing to see such support and encouragement from such major corporations. It shows that the world, as a whole, is making a big change. It also teaches people that many different norms of society no longer exist. Although some people still live in the ideas of the past, it is important to know that the diverse consumers can feel like they can put their trust and confidence into the leading brands and that they feel accepted as well. By the way, any corporation would be stupid to defer anyone away from their product. That's money lost for them.
