Sean G. Smith's curator insight, July 21, 2013 7:25 PM

This is such an awesome, and sort of comical, article. It just goes to show that trends and fashions, of all type, can change almost instantly. This new era of social media and technological trends tends to leave marketing and public relations specialists in a bit of a crunch. This article gives examples of phrases that may have once been "in" and popular that are now not so hot. I think that one very big point was made in this article which really drew me in.

"Diversity Awareness" is an absolute detrimental part of any message or campaign that goes out into the general public. People will take offense to ANYTHING in this day and age, and will most likely try to screw your company big time. It takes time and research, but I think that it's completely worth it. You know who you are talking to and referring to, without offending anyone (hopefully).

LGBT in the Media: An Openly Gay Country Star?!

LGBT in the Media: An Openly Gay Country Star?! | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

We talk frequently about the importance of marriage equality, and this is absolutely one of the most important things to be striving for right now. However, there is another area that still has far to go and that is representation in entertainment media. As a society, we are miles ahead of previous generations, but are far from where we should be. We are seeing more and more LGBT television characters and we are slowly seeing more and more LGBT characters in Hollywood films.

Crowdfunding campaign launches for same-sex marriage | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

Crowdfunding – a fast-growing concept that harnesses the power of the Internet to let people pool their money for companies and causes – has come to the campaign for same-sex marriage.

In the wake of the US Supreme Court’s landmark decisions upholding same-sex marriage, four LGBT-owned businesses in California have collaborated to set up a crowdfunding initiative supporting Freedom to Marry, a nonprofit that stands for marriage equality. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia let same-sex couples get married.

LGBT Market Trends & Destination Marketing

LGBT Market Trends & Destination Marketing | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

"As the global visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community increases, there has a steady increase in interest in this community as a consumer group, a trend which is particularly evident in the travel industry.

Several destinations have just launched dedicated tourism campaigns targeting the LGBT market. Here is a selection of the latest initiatives"

Keagan Kristoff's curator insight, December 4, 2013 11:24 PM

Equal rights for lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender (LGBT) population is hot topic in news today. With the recent gay marriage law passing in Illinois which legalizes gay marriage, I found this article about travel and its' affect on the LGBT community fitting to recent news stories.

According to the World Tourism Organization and International Gay and Lesibian Travel Association, men associated with the LGBT population take an average of 3.9 trips per year where a woman takes 3.3 trips per year. Research also shows that the LGBT community spends higher than the average person while traveling and that they are highly influenced by social media, technology and word of mouth. This proves that the tourism industry must think of creative ways to market to the LGBT community. This article provided examples of two campaigns in marketing toward their target publics. First, New Zealand launched its'  "Make history" campaign which promotes a competition that offers free travel, wedding, and a honeymoon to the first same-sex couple to wed in New Zealand. This competition provides free coverage to promote New Zealand as a same-sex friendly wedding and travel desitination. The logo used to promote the competition is even same-sex oriented by having bold white letters for "Choose to Make," and rainbow letters for "history." The second campaign is created by the state of New York. New York created their own campaign geared toward LGBT travelers. The governor of New York launched a LGBT tourism website that featured a calendar of LGBT events and popular destinations. In addition, the website dedicated part of the website to information about the history of New York's LGBT community. Also, the campaign logo takes the original red heart in the slogan,  " I love NY" and replaces it with a rainbow heart. Finally, a promotional video was released that showed same-sex couples enjoying themselves at destinations across the state of New York. Public opinion affects public relations. The change of marriage laws opened up a new population for wedding and travel destinations. Without this change, marketers would have never been able to target their campaigns toward the LGBT community. "Public opinion is a public's expressed attitudes on a particular topic at a particular moment in time (Guth & Marsh 268)."  It is no secret that gay rights is a top topic of discussion nowadays. With more states and countries passing laws legalizing gay marriage it makes since to gear travel destinations toward this population. Unfortunately, trying to gain the LGBT population's attention may turn off other conservative markets. However, the benefits outweigh the cost because not only are marketers gaining a new population to target but, also the support and respect from LGBT supporters. A pat on the back is deserved to these destinations that are choosing to ethically include all types of travelers in their campaigns.

Getting in on the Gay: Sports Marketing to LGBTs

Getting in on the Gay: Sports Marketing to LGBTs | LGBT Online Media, Marketing and Advertising | Scoop.it

Two of the biggest media sensations on the sports circuit right now, 22 year-old Brittney Griner and 34 year-old Jason Collins, have become household names and LGBT heroes. Their popularity has extended beyond the court and both are looking at the sweet benefits of being marketable.

Joe Mechenbier's curator insight, October 29, 2013 5:34 PM

Brittany Griner and Nike have an endorsement deal, but Griner will be modeling clothes for men, not women. This is huge for sport marketing because the LGBT demographic is largely unclaimed and Nike is annoucing thier support for the LGBT community.

Tyler Papania's curator insight, October 30, 2013 9:53 PM

This article focuses a lot on how two gay athletes have become very marketable because of their connections with sport. It speaks about the positives of marketing athletes in order to drive sales. It also shows that it pays to take advantage of a situation like that of Bittney Griner and Jason Collins to reach another market that might not have before been interested.

Chris Melendey's curator insight, October 14, 2014 10:11 PM

This article talks about Brittney Griner and how nike is using her to market different kinds of products. Griner is the first openly gay woman that nike has sponsored. Girly clothes really wasn't her style so Nike is sponsoring her with mens clothes and Nike SB. This approach will broaden Nike mens products to women. I found this entire article interesting and this opens a different way of marketing for me.
